MoDOT is planning to update the entire I-70 corridor over approximately the next 10 years. The
ImproveI-70 web site has a project timeline, feedback forms, and information about the planning process.
The project is still in the planning stages. Planners are
required by law to solicit and consider public input of a wide range of stakeholders in designing projects such as this.
There is and will be no other bicycleable corridor across the middle of Missouri close the I-70 corridor. So consideration of bicycle-related issues in the I-70 project seems important:
- Creation of a continuous frontage road running on at least one side of I-70 across the entire state.
- Including rideable shoulders on frontage roads.
- Keeping frontage roads close to the freeway corridor so as to avoid long detours for bicyclists.
- Bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly access across I-70 at every newly constructed over- or under-pass crossing the new I-70.
- Retention of all current bicycleable roads crossing I-70 and consideration of the possibility of adding new connections across I-70, to improve the connectivity, bicycleability, and walkability of the transportation network surrounding I-70, especially in urbanized areas.
