In the winter, wear a balaclava -- headgear that fits over the face and neck, leaving only the eyes exposed . . . Be visible, wearing bright clothing and staying out in the lane. Maintain a steady line so drivers can anticipate your course and pass safely. . . . A good way to carry things without lugging a backpack is to attach panniers or baskets to the bike.
