Kryptonite lock exchange program gets into gear

Many cyclists have heard the Kryptonite (and other manufacturer's) locks with the round keys and cylinders have a serious vulnerability--many of them can be opened in a few seconds using the barrel from a Bic pen.

Kryptonite has an exchange program for these defective locks. You can sign up for the exchange program on a special page on the Kryptonite web site.

Kryptonite says that the exchange program is moving along and the first batch of UPS return tags will go out to people who have registered for the return program on October 18th, 2004.

These people will use the UPS return tags to return their old locks and then Kryptonite will send them a new lock with improved key system to replace it.

Some people have just been sending back their locks to Kryptonite without signing up for the exchange program first. Kryptonite says that these people will get new locks but it they will be a very long time coming. They have set up the exchange program to expedite processing what is obviously a VERY large number of locks, so the best plan if you want to exchange your Kryptonite lock is to use the exchange program web site and follow the instructions there.
