Springfield passes "Double Fines in School Zones" ordinance
Submitted by Brent Hugh on Tue, 12/14/2004 - 9:18pm
According to Lori Minor of the Traffic Safety Alliance, Springfield has recently passed a new ordinance mandating doubled fines in school zones.
Springfield's law enforcement and traffic engineers worked hard to get the word out about this law and the benefits it will provide to the community.
The full text of the ordinance is available online (PDF format).
Springfield city is continuing to monitor the effectiveness of the new law.
This law could be a model for other cities around Missouri to follow.
The Missouri Bicycle Federation, in cooperation with the Missouri state PTA and bicycle and pedestrian groups around the state, has supported legislation mandating a 20 MPH school speed limit and double fines in school zones in Missouri.
Much research indicates that this approach is effective in making it safer for children to walk to school.
