Columbia working for more bicycle parking downtown
Submitted by Brent Hugh on Tue, 07/11/2006 - 6:13pm
According to a Columbia Missourian article:
“My employees have complained for years about the lack of bike racks,” owner Leigh Lockhart said. “This isn’t a good system.”Columbia already has far more bicycle parking downtown than do most Missouri cities.
Lockhart is pushing for more bike racks downtown as a way to promote cycling and reduce the need to drive in the area. The PedNet Coalition also supports the installation of more bike racks . . . .
Lockhart said that most of Main Squeeze’s customers and employees bike or walk to the restaurant and that the number and type of bike racks lining Ninth Street are inadequate. U-shaped bars attached to the street’s meters allow for bikes to be chained on the sidewalk parallel to the street.
