Please spread the word about Walk to School Day--Oct 4th
Submitted by Brent Hugh on Mon, 09/18/2006 - 4:30am
I received the following message today from Deb Hubsmith of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. Deb has been extremely helpful to us here in Missouri as we have worked to get our state Safe Routes programming up and running as a truly effective program.
As she mentions below, starting with a "walk to school day" sometime within the month of October is a really easy thing to do, and yet helps generate interest within schools for participating in a more thoroughgoing SRTS program later on.
Click here for Missouri Safe Routes to School resources, including the SRTS handbook.

International Walk to School Day
Celebrate Walk to School Day on October 4, 2006 or pick any day in October to participate in International Walk to School Month. http://www.walkbiketoschool.org/
Register your Walk to School event at http://www.walktoschool.org/register and join millions of children and adults around the globe who participate in this annual event.
All registered schools have the chance to win: (1) pedometers and educational materials from Walk 4 Life, Inc and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education and (2) high visibility backpacks from Lands' End. The Cool Blue backpack from Lands' End, an $80 value, has rechargeable lights on the front and back that are visible up to 1000 feet away. Random drawings occur every week leading up to Walk to School Day. Every week, four schools receive pedometers and ten schools receive twenty backpacks each. Grand prizes include pedometers for a classroom and 100 backpacks for two schools.
Remember, an event can be as simple as announcing Walk to School Day and encouraging children and parents to walk (and/or bike) to school together. For planning ideas, see http://www.walktoschool.org/eventideas.
Please spread the word about International Walk to School Day by forwarding this message. Thanks!
