At BikeMO October 14th, Karen Mitchell, Deputy Attorney General, and Georganne Nixon, Attorney General Jay Nixon's wife, spoke about the Attorney General's ongoing commitment to preserving and extending the Katy Trail.

Mitchell said that Nixon has worked hard to protect the legal status of the Katy Trail through his efforts on the Boonville Bridge preservation. Mitchell indicated that the Attorney General supports the idea of connecting the Katy Trail to Kansas City as part of the AmerenUE settlement.
Mrs. Nixon said that Nixon had worked in favor of the Katy Trail when he was a state senator. Now he supports extending the trail to Kansas City and will do what he can in negotiations with AmerenUE.
However, she also said very clearly that the Attorney General very much needs support from citizens, from organizations, from politicians, and from governments and agencies that support the Katy Trail connection to Kansas City. Without this political support the Attorney General will not get far.
Individuals can send Ameren and the Attorney General a message here (takes two minutes or less).Clubs, organizations, cities, and agencies can send a letter or pass a proclamation in support of the "Complete Katy Trail".
Sample letters/proclamations are here. Please encourage any club or organization you belong to, to adopt this proclamation. Ask you city and county representatives to pass the proclamation.
AmerenUE's Taum Sauk dam broke in December 2005, destroying major areas of the Johnson Shut-ins State Park. Ameren owns or has a controlling interest in the portion of the Rock Island Railroad that connects the Katy Trail to the Kansas City metropolitan area.
