The [McKinley] bridge should reopen late next fall. Built in 1910, it closed in 2001 after the Illinois Department of Transportation said it was too dilapidated for traffic. Repair work began in 2005 and it's extensive. Crews are 60 percent done, said Barry Gibbs, supervising field engineer for the Illinois Transportation Department. Right now, they're making structural repairs under the bridge and rebuilding the approach on the Illinois side, he said.

The McKinley Bridge links Interstate 70 in St. Louis with Route 3 in Venice. It will reopen with two traffic lanes, an outer bicycle lane and no toll booths.
