Sun glare leads to collisions

Twice a year the sun rises and sets almost directly in the east and west.

Since many of our roads and streets are aligned east/west this creates a problem for drivers operating at that time.

Each year there are collisions in Missouri resulting from this phenomenon.

The injuries and deaths almost always involve young drivers, who are not prepared to deal with this relatively rare situation.

The injuries and deaths disproportionately affect pedestrians and bicyclists.

Two teen-aged pedestrians were struck and seriously injuried in Springfield Saturday.

A young boy on the way to school was struck by a teenaged driver in Gower recently.

MoBikeFed has issued a press release detailing the problem of sun glare while driving and some solutions. We have also proposed updates to the Missouri Driver Guide to discuss this issue, which is not covered in the current Driver Guide.
