Great Rivers Greenway District Ribbon Cutting for Riverwoods Trail is June 20, 2007

Wetland trail along the Missouri River in Bridgeton features panoramic views of river and St. Charles

The Great Rivers Greenway District, the public organization leading the development of a region-wide network of interconnected greenways, parks and trails, will celebrate the completion of Riverwoods Trail with a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. on Wed., June 20. The Riverwoods Trailhead is located on the Missouri River and St. Charles Rock Road approximately one-quarter mile west of the Earth City Expressway .

The tree shaded 1.5 mile trail through the woods is a natural wetland experience for biking, hiking or just enjoying wildlife. Developed by The Great Rivers Greenway District in cooperation with the City of Bridgeton and the Missouri Department of Conservation, it features exceptional panoramic views of the Missouri River, as well as picture perfect scenes of St. Charles and the Katy Trail on the opposite shoreline.

“The Great Rivers Greenway District has transformed this unique area of Bridgeton into a major public amenity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages for many years,” said Conrad Bowers, Mayor of Bridgeton. “It is certain to become one of the most popular destinations in the region as bikers and hikers discover this trail.”

David Fisher, Executive Director of The Great Rivers Greenway District, added, "This trail is unique because it provides excellent access to a little known urban forest full of shady cottonwoods, maples and plenty of wildlife. The six overlooks along the trail provide exceptional vistas of downtown St. Charles, the Katy Trail and Frontier Park. The trail will be a great lunchtime amenity for the 25,000 employees in neighboring Earth City and Bridgeton as well.

The Riverwoods Trail, which will be open to the public daily from dawn to dusk, will be regulated and maintained by the City of Bridgeton.
