Gaunt Memorial Ride: Comments and followup

Over 650 bicyclists rode last Wednesday to honor and remember Larry and Sierra Gaunt, who were killed two weeks ago in a crash on one of the Kansas City area's most popular bicycle routes.

The Grandview police investigated the incident and have turned over their findings to the Jackson County prosecutor. Several area bicycle organizations have contacted the prosecutor's office to emphasize their interest in this matter. Frankly, too many drivers who have killed--whether through inattention, dangerous driving behavior, negligence, or malice--have gotten off with a slap on the wrist.

The prosecutor's office reports that they are taking the case very seriously indeed that the case was taken to the Homicide Review Board last Friday. However, no word has been received since that time.

This was the first event of this type I’ve ever been involved with, and I must say that it was rather moving. The realization that a tragedy like this could happen to any of us at any time seemed to be an unspoken thought in everyone’s mind. To look at the roadway where they were killed, and to see that it’s an absolutely straight and level piece of road with a wide shoulder and clear sight-lines, makes it hard to fathom how something like this could happen.

There wasn't much talking; the ambiance was an odd balance of sadness and awe. I'd say that's about how this ride struck me as well. It's sad that yet again two cyclists died at the hands of a careless motorist when it could have easily been avoided. On the other hand, it's amazing that their story touched so many people and brought us together.

Larry and Sierra did not die in vain, nor will they be forgotten.
