Kansas City, Missouri, to make plan for levee trails

Prodded by Councilman Russ Johnson, the Kansas City, Missouri, City Council has unanimously adopted a resolution calling for city officials to create a plan to open the city-owned levees for recreational and trail use.

Directing the City Manager to submit a plan within 90 days to open levees owned and/or maintained by the City for public recreational usage.

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri has invested in a flood-control levee system; and

WHEREAS, the Citys levee system has been paid for and is owned by all of the citizens of this great city; and

WHEREAS, the City has public and park land adjacent to the majority of the City levee system; and,

WHEREAS, the levee system has portions that serve as access roads for the levee system; and

WHEREAS, the levee system could be better monitored for maintenance; and

WHEREAS, usage of the levee system by the public would increase the monitoring of the levee system by providing access and allowing citizens to report items; and

WHEREAS, security of the levee system is enhanced by increased visibility and usage of the levee system by the Citys citizens; and,

WHEREAS, the economic development potential of the City is increased when the planned Missouri River trail system from St. Louis to Omaha is completed; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council direct the City Manager to submit a plan within 90 days to open the levees owned and/or maintained by the City for public recreational usage.
