Join us in Washington, DC, for the National Bike Summit!
posted by Brent Hugh at 1/05/2008 11:45:00 AM
Missouri bicyclists, walkers, runners, and trail users:

The 2008 National Bike Summit in Washington DC is coming soon--March 4-7, 2008.

Have YOU considered attending as a representative of Missouri bicyclists in your area?

Last year we had the largest delegation at the Bike Summit EVER from Missouri--and we all had a BLAST.

The Summit is one of the best opportunities to advance bicycling and other nonmotorized modes of transportation across Missouri and the entire country.

So if you'd like to join us--if you are even thinking about joining us--for a great time in DC, plus help us with some of the most effective advocacy we do, please email me (director@mobikefed.org) ASAP.

The time is coming very near to make final travel and lodging arrangements. We would really like to have someone from EACH of Missouri's 9 congressional districts attend and a good contingent from Kansas as well.

The model other states have used, is for local bicycle clubs and organizations across the state to sponsor a delegate from their area. If the local organization can put in about $500 and the individual another $500, that about covers the cost.

I am putting together an email list of people interested in attending this year, and also working on group lodging at a greatly reduced price.

If our lodging works out as planned, we will rent a group apartment or flat for the entire week for a flat rate. So you will be able to stay a day or two on either end at no extra cost, if you like--and this will be at a fraction of the price we all paid for 3 or 4 days of hotel rooms last year.

The Bike Summit is March 4-7, 2008. It starts fairly late in the afternoon on March 4th, so you can fly in that day/afternoon or even evening if necessary. It is finished by Noon on the 7th, so if necessary you can leave that afternoon (or even that morning, if you don't mind missing the congressional bike ride).

The estimated cost breakdown for attending (based on registering & reserving flights SOON): Conference registration is $350, flight about $250-$300, rooms are $200-$250/night IF you stay in a regular DC area hotel.

If our group lodging works out as planned, the total cost per person for lodging for the entire week (flat weekly rate, regardless of actual number of days stayed, per person) should be in the $200-$400 range. So total cost per person would be around $1000 plus food.

Again, if you are interested in joining us at the 2008 Bike Summit--even just potentially, possibly, hypothetically interested--email me (director@mobikefed.org) and I'll keep you informed as things progress.
