March 26th, 2008, Missouri's "Complete Streets" bill, HB 2206, passed the House Rules Committee.

The bill is now on the House Consent Calendar. That means it is awaiting a vote of the full House.

The nationwide Complete Streets movement is based on the idea that state, regional, and local agencies should plan, design, and build our transportation network to meet the needs of all users.

In particular, that means that streets and roads must be designed for all those that need to use them: pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, transit vehicles, the old, the young, people with disabilities, and of course motorists.

HB 2206 is sponsored by Rep. Mike Sutherland (Mike.Sutherland[at]house.mo.gov).

Due to concerns voiced by MoDOT, this version of the Complete Streets bill is not as powerful as the original version. However it still has some very good and much needed provisions.
