MoBikeFed member Bobby Duebelbies recently started a blog called
Biking to Work about his experiences and adventures starting out bicycle commuting.
He writes:I am guilty of commuting back and forth between home and work twice a day, five days a week. It is a short, 5 mile drive, but the impact on the environment and my wallet have been a growing concern of mine. I am buying a bike this week and am launching my “virtual commute” with this blog. . . .
The more I think about it, the more sense buying a bicycle makes: My commute is short, only about 5 miles. I am close to public transportation if I get caught in the elements. I could stand to get a more efficient and regular exercise in every day. I am concerned about my personal impact on the environment and am always looking for ways I can live more harmoniously.
He tells the story of his first bike commute here:
The morning was already a steaming 80 degrees in St. Louis. I showered and packed my work clothes into a messenger bag along with some deodorant and a towel. The last thing I want to happen when I get into work is make my coworkers miserable, having to suffer my stink lingering around my office.
I worked through all of the gearing comfortably, but really had to push up some of the steeper inclines. The bike responded really well, but it’s going take a little more practice for me to master the thumb vs index shifting. I found myself getting caught gearing down when I wanted to gear up and vice versa.
