Improved Bicycle Commuter Act introduced in Congress

An improved version of the Bicycle Commuter Act has been introduced by Rep. Earl Blumenauer. The improved version will fix some of the problems associated with the version that was passed last summer and help to put benefits for bicycle commuting on par with those employers are able to offer for other types of commuting--such as transit (transit fares), carpooling or vanpooling, and automobile commuting (parking expenses).

Information from Rep. Blumenauer's office says:
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, bicycles are second only to cars as a preferred form of transportation, and ahead of public transportation, however many bike commuters may not be able to ride every day because of inclement weather. Alternatively, many commuters need to bike a short distance before reaching a transit station. This legislation recognizes that employees should be able to structure their commute benefit to match the practices they use to get to work.
