National Bike Summit 2009: Suzie Stephens Memorial Tree Planting

Susie Stephens, a bicycle advocate who made a national impact, was killed by a bus in 2002 while crossing a crosswalk in St. Louis, where she was attending a conference.

The bus driver, who had failed to yield to Stephens as she was crossing the crosswalk, later pleaded guilty and was fined $500.

The injustice of this case has been a major impetus behind MoBikeFed's efforts to improve Missouri's laws to create traffic justice for bicyclists and pedestrians--including supporting a bill that was heard in a House committee just this week.

Stephens' mother has planted trees in Susie's memory in locations around the world.

These two trees were planted at 1612 K Street NW in Washington, DC, just in front of the building that holds the national headquarters of the League of American Bicyclists, Alliance for Biking and Walking, and America Bikes.

The memorial trees were planted during Day 4 of the 2009 National Bike Summit, immediately after the Congressional Bike Ride.
