MoDOT is targeting a chunk of federal stimulus money to build sidewalks and accessible ramps along three major north St. Louis County roads. The project will do more than improve safety for pedestrians. North Lindbergh in Hazelwood is far from a friendly thoroughfare for anyone navigating it on foot or in a wheelchair. But that's about to change.
MoDOT District Engineer Ed Hassinger announced Friday morning, "We are here to break ground on another American Recovery and Re-investment Act project or 'stimulus' as many of us know it."
$1.6 million worth of federal funds will finance the project, improve safety and accessibility and keep construction crews working. It's the type of work even big firms are looking for. . . . The project also calls for similar sidewalk construction along St. Charles Rock Road in St. Ann, and Halls Ferry in Florissant.
It would be even more meaningful if MODOT were to
adopt the Complete Streets Act.

Why does our Missouri "Highway" Department, aka
Missouri Department of Transporation, primarily invest in cars? Are bikers
on this site not outraged that there are little to no improvements to
public bike facilities happening in the state? Your state currently
invests in cars, and that doesn't outrage you?? Contact:

I'm a
little concerned that you have now written the same basic comment,
essentially irrelevant to the article you posted it on, twice with two
different names.
This is a bit like spamming, isn't it?

OK, now "Fred", who has also posted essentially
the same message on a different article as "Ben", is now attempting to
impersonate me and posted the above message (dated 09/25/09 07:36am) as
"Brent".
And also doesn't hesitate to praise himself ("Fred has a
good point.")--as though none of the rest of us will notice he's doing
this?
Fred/Ben/Fake Brent: We're more than happy to talk with you
about any issues you like, but when you engage in such foolishness it
undermines any credibility you may have had to start with.

I REALLY wish they could use some of this money
on the nearby 370 bridge to make it more palatable to commuters. Done
right, this could create a high use bike commuter route as it connects the
KATY trail (i.e. the heavily residential area of St Charles) directly with
2 areas that are highly concentrated with employers, Earth City and Boeing.
The recent "upgrade" for the currently crumbling bike paths to the bridge
was to clear a few weeds that were encroaching from the sides. Any way you
could take up this cause like you have for the bridge in KC?

MODOT is not bicycle friendly. One of MODOT's
professional engineers - the guy who designs projects - told me one time he
was so furious being stuck behind a group of MS150 riders that he wished he
could run them over. He has also stated several times that he doesn't
believe cyclists belong on the roads. Don't you think that when this guy
designs projects he doesn't structure it so there's no funding left in the
project for cyclist friendly improvements? If one guy at MODOT that high
up has this attitude, I'm sure many do. Modot is not our friend, they're a
nasty ally we have to deal with, at best.
