Two pedestrians hit, one killed, Saturday in St. Louis

Crime Beat from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that two pedestrians were hit Saturday, and one of them killed:

A St. Louis woman was killed Saturday night after being struck on Interstate 70 at Salisbury Street, police said. . . .

In an unrelated crash Saturday, police said a 51-year-old man was in critical condition after being hit on a sidewalk in the 8300 block of Halls Ferry Road.

Police said the driver, a woman, 23, dropped a cell phone inside her minivan, lost control and struck the man. . . .

The woman who dropped her cell phone was charged with careless and imprudent driving.

In MoDOT District 6--which includes St. Louis--pedestrians represent about 5% of trips in but 14% of traffic-related fatalities and 7% of injuries.
