Complete Streets Resolution heard in Missouri House Transportation Committee Tuesday
The hearing on Rep. Sutherland's Complete Streets Resolution, HCR 67, was held Tuesday in the House Transportation Committee.
Rep Sutherland explained the bill, and answered several questions from committee members.
The only real objection brought up was Rep. Munzlinger, who was concerned that building these 'amenities' in urbanized areas will reduce the amount of funding available for MoDOT to do maintenance and maintain pavement quality on its rural highway system.
Brent Hugh of the Missouri Bicycle & Pedestrian Federation testified the many reasons to support better bicycling and walking facilities, and the recent progress MoDOT has made on these issues.
Jim Farrell testified on behalf of Great Rivers Greenway & American Heart Association in support of the Complete Streets resolution.
No one else testified for or against.
We really appreciate Rep. Sutherland's championing of this issue over the past several years--as always, he did a great job presenting the bill and talking with committee members about it Tuesday. Shawn D'Abreu of Paraquad testified about the importance of this issue for people with disabilities.
The Committee is likely to vote on the resolution within the next week or so.
In the meanwhile, contacting Transportation Committee members in support of HCR 67 is very helpful.
Thanks to the many of you who have taken the time to call, email, or fax your representatives in support of Complete Streets. When you speak up it really does make a difference!
