Bike Share Coming to Crossroads First Friday in May
Kansas City, MO May 2, 2011 – Paris has one. Chicago has one.
Washington, DC has one. Soon, Kansas City will have bike share.
BikeShareKC is bringing Kansas City its first bike share program.
The opening demonstration will occur from 6:00 until 10:00 P.M. on May
6th at Crossroad’s First Friday event in the parking lot of 2001
Baltimore. This exposition will allow the public to test the bike
sharing system before it hits Kansas City’s streets. The event will
showcase B-cycle bike sharing systems and the public is invited to
come test ride the bicycles, and experience bike sharing used in
cities such as Washington DC, Denver, London, Chicago, Paris and
Minneapolis.
According to Jay Matlack, owner of Tricycle Transit, “Bike sharing is
right around the corner for Kansas City. We soon expect to have at
least six stations in the metro. Bike Share offers a great green
alternative to cars for short commutes and errands.”
Similar to car sharing, bicycle sharing is a membership-based bicycle
rental. Members check a bicycle out from a network of automated
bicycle kiosks, ride to their destination, and return the bicycle to a
new station. To maximize use of the bicycles, the first half hour of
each trip is free of charge, with fees increasing over time. This
keeps bicycles in the system for use by all members. BikeShareKC is
simple. Sign up online or pay at the kiosk with a credit card.
The First Friday bike share demonstration is sponsored by the
BikeShareKC, a joint venture between Tricycle Transit and BikeWalkKC.
