Ameren is currently considering bids to sell the Rock Island railroad corridor--including about 145 miles that hasn't seen railroad traffic in several decades and that neighboring communities would like to see become part of a statewide Rock Island Trail, similar in scope to the Katy Trail.

Ameren officials have indicated that they are in favor of the trail concept, as have Missouri State Parks officials.  Many details of the forthcoming sale of the corridor will determine whether the Rock Island Trail will be a reality soon or whether it may be delayed by decades--again.

The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has submitted one of the bids to purchase the railroad from Ameren. Part of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy's purpose in doing that was to create the best possible opportunity for the new cross-state trail to become a reality. KBIA has more details about the proposed trail.

If you haven't yet sent a message of support for the Rock Island Trail, please do so now.

Over 11,000 messages of support made a pretty big pile!   Potential Rock Island Trail - a new 200+ mile trail corridor
