PETITION: Sunset Hills should become a Bicycle Friendly City

442 signatures submitted so far. We'd like to reach 500 or more signatures before we submit the petition to Sunset Hills!

The St Louis County cycling community is in an uproar after a motorist shouted at and threatened cyclist Randy Murdick, ran into and injured Murdick, and then drove off.

The driver turned out to be Mayor of Sunset Hills, Missouri.

We believe that Sunset Hills needs to take several positive steps to address this situation.

Sunset Hills City and St Louis County Prosecutor,

After the incident involving the Sunset Hills Mayor harassing and hitting a cyclist with his vehicle, we believe that the city and the county needs to take positive action to improve its reputation and make the city safer for bicycling.

We urge the St. Louis County Prosecutor's office to treat this incident as seriously as any other assault with intent to injure or kill:
 
 * Take this case seriously and press serious charges against Mayor Furrer for these reprehensible and dangerous actions

* Given the deliberate, dangerous, and vindictive actions of the mayor in this incident, the Mayor's history of threats, confrontations, and dangerous driving, and the Mayor's attempt to flee the scene and evade responsibility, press for serious and substantial penalties for the crimes that Mayor Furrer committed, including prison time

* Because the Mayor threatened, then deliberately injured a cyclist with his automobile, penalties must include:

- Removing and/or very substantially restricting Furrer's driving privileges after he is released from prison
  - The driving restriction must be permanent or for a very significant length of time
  - If driving privileges are ever reinstated, Furrer's driving must be continually monitored and restrictions reinstated if any incidents of this type recur

We urge Sunset Hills to:

* Take the Mayor's dangerous and irresponsible actions seriously and apply serious sanctions as warranted after a thorough, serious, and impartial investigation
 
 * Start work now to improve safety for cyclists in the city:

- Immediately form a Bicycle/Pedestrian Friendly Community committee with the goal of making serious and thoroughgoing changes to the city's bicycle and pedestrian policies, laws, and infrastructure, and with a deadline for finalizing the city's action plan and applying for official Bicycle Friendly Community status one year from now
 
    - Pass a community-wide anti-harassment law applying to bicyclists and pedestrians

- Institute an annual Police Department review of procedure and current law pertaining to cyclist and pedestrians
 
    - Institute bicycle patrol training, offered by the St. Louis County Police Department, for all Sunset Hills Police Department officers and train all current officers within one year
 
 * Donate all proceeds from the upcoming Sunset Hills Triathlon to bicycle advocacy.
