National bike/ped counts happening in September; How you can help
It's that time of year again--bicycle and pedestrian counts in cities across the country as part of the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project.
We know that millions of people bicycle and walk daily--but no state or federal agency keeps track of the amount of bicycling and walking closely enough to be able to tell us how many walking or biking trips there are in a year or in a given community or state, or whether the amount of bicycling and walking is increasing or decreasing.
Trailnet and Great Rivers Greenway are leading the charge for bike/ped counts in the St Louis area:
Trailnet, supported by Great Rivers Greenway, is participating in the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project for the third year in a row.
As we continue to collect count data each consecutive year, we will be able to show changes in bicycling and pedestrian activity. Documenting these changes is essential to shaping infrastructure projects that will make our region more livable for all.
We need YOU to count cyclists and pedestrians at various locations around our region. We need volunteers who can commit to counting from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at one location on September 9 or September 10. Bicycle and pedestrian counts are great opportunity to meet your neighbors while helping the region support active transportation projects.

Kansas City, Columbia, Springfield, and other Missouri communities have participated in the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation project. Find out more about the Documentation Project, and how to get started with bike/ped counts in your community, here.
