America's Rails-with-Trails: Rail-with-Trail List | Rails-to-Trails Conservancy

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

Rails-with-trails, which are trails located adjacent to active rail lines, are valuable assets in providing safe transportation networks for pedestrians and bicyclists. In 2013, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy produced a report that examines the characteristics of 88 existing rails-with-trails in 33 states, based on a survey of trail managers and the results of RTC’s ongoing study. America's Rails-with-Trails provides a collection of data, examples and practical tools to assist trail planners and advocates in increasing awareness of the rail-with-trail concept, and advancing local and state policies and practices that support rail-with-trail development.

This document, part of the online appendix for the report, lists all rails-with-trails known to RTC across the nation.

MoBikeFed comment: Missouri has several potential rails-with-trails corridors. In making these projects turn from idea into reality, it is important to know where similar projects have been created across the U.S. and to know the details, such as their safety record.

(The record shows that rails-with-trails actually improves safety of the underlying rail corridor, by giving people a safe place to walk along the corridor and channeling rail crossing points to safe locations.)
