Bicycle racks on Amtrak trains may soon become a reality.

Amtrak said it will begin to introduce new baggage cars equipped with bicycle racks on all of its long-distance trains, including the Capitol Limited serving the Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., route, by the end of the year.

Officials in Connellsville are happy to see that the service may finally come to fruition.

“This is a service and amenity that we want to make sure we can offer,” Amtrak spokesman Craig Schulz said.

MoBikeFed comment: The new bicycle roll-on service announced in this article is part of a national trend towards accommodating bicycles better on Amtrak.

MoDOT is working to include bicycle roll-on and storage in new rail cars that will be used on Missouri Amtrak routes. The rail cars should be purchased and put into use within the next couple of years. Missouri is part of a multi-state consortium purchasing the new Amtrak cars--and that means that all of these states will see better Amtrak bicycle service, though exact details may vary by state.
