A Missouri lawmaker thinks we should be able to drive a little faster on rural interstates and highways.

Rep. Mike Kelley, R-Lamar, has filed a bill to increase the top speed on Missouri’s highways from 70 mph to 75 mph. . . .

A recent study from the American Journal of Public Health looked specifically at states that raised speed limits on rural interstates, including those increased by 5 mph. Researchers found fatalities increased on every road and jumped more than 9 percent on rural interstates. Another study found a speed limit increase to 75 mph resulted in about 300 more deaths than an increase to 70 mph.

That’s why the chief engineer for the Missouri Transportation Department, Ed Hassinger, testified against the bill to increase speed limits.
