The Amtrak system is coded to show which routes allow roll-on bicycle access and which require bicycles to be boxed before shipment.

Missouri's roll-on route was created in the late 1990s when members of MoBikeFed worked with state legislators and Amtrak to create the roll-on bicycle system that allows Katy Trail users to easily use Amtrak to access the trail in several locations.
