Bike-friendly cities are built, not born - Columbia is moving in the right direction, but still behind the best in the U.S. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

All too often, folks dis Columbia because it’s not Portland, Boulder or Copenhagen. I think there are some important things the naysayers don’t realize. First, famous bike meccas aren’t born; they are built. These cities made a conscious effort at some point to make biking an integral part of their transportation systems, and most of them started long before we did. In addition, people have to be engaged in their communities to ensure they are safe and convenient for biking and walking. Last, it takes a dedicated network of involved citizens, business owners and organizations working together to make a community a great place to bike and live.

We are lucky to have PedNet and Missouri Bicycle Federation — our local and state advocacy organizations; active and involved bike shops; GetAbout Columbia rides and classes; engaged city council members and numerous citizens who support our bike and trail systems. We have come a long way toward becoming bike-friendly here in Columbia, but we have a long way to go before we are as bike-awesome as I know we can be.
