Completed shortly before protests thrust West Florissant Avenue into the national spotlight, a $37 million plan to transform the street into a vibrant economic byway is poised to move forward.

The East-West Gateway Council of Governments this year allocated $2 million to proceed with a proposal that would place West Florissant among the eight area roadways funded by the Great Streets Initiative. . . .

Planners nonetheless say it is now possible to foresee a day when shops and merchants will conduct business along a West Florissant with bricked and improved sidewalks, bicycle lanes, stylish lampposts and lush landscaping.
