MoDOT design-build plan for rebuilding 3 interestate bridges in Columbia gets pedestrian commission approval | columbiamissourian.com

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

The city's Bicycle/Pedestrian Commission met Tuesday evening with representatives from the Missouri Department of Transportation and contractor Emery Sapp & Sons to discuss the rebuilding of three bridges over Interstate 70.

Construction of bridges over Range Line Street, Garth Avenue and Business Loop 70 is scheduled to begin Monday and be completed at a cost of $18 million by October 2016. MoDOT is replacing the three bridges because it would cost more to repair them. . . .

Commission Chairman Mike Burden said the project as a whole wasn't a "pie in the sky" situation. However, the new bridges would be "vast improvements on all intersections" for all modes of traffic. Burden also said he appreciated Koestner and engineer Mike Schupp, as well as project manager Chip Jones of Emery Sapp & Sons, for meeting with them.

MoBikeFed comment: We have been involved in this process, along with local Columbia citizens, elected officials, and PedNet. It is unfortunate that MoDOT did not involve bicycle and pedestrian groups and planning earlier in the process, but it seems that the final result will be reasonable good for improving bicycle and pedestrian access for these three bridges.
