Eastern Panhandle tourism officials lauded Amtrak's launch of “walk-on” bicycle service on its Capitol Limited route this month, including the national passenger rail service's stations in Martinsburg and Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

Passengers now are able to roll their bikes along the platform and onto the train and secure them on a rack in the baggage cars, Amtrak announced in a news release.

Amtrak partnered with Adventure Cycling Association and other bicycle and passenger rail groups to form an advisory task force to oversee the project to establish walk-on bike service on the route that runs from Washington to Chicago.

MoBikeFed comment: We have been working with a national group of bicycle and pedestrian advocacy groups towards improved roll-on service for bicyclists on Amtrak routes nationwide. This is one of the first positive steps in that effort.
