Patrick McKenna of the New Hampshire DOT named MoDOT Director
MoDOT has announced the appointment of its new Director--Patrick McKenna, previously Deputy Director of the New Hampshire DOT.
The Missouri Bicycle & Pedestrian Federation and our allies across the state have been advocating with MoDOT to appoint a new director who will give strong support for walking, bicycling, and transit across the state. This summer, MoBikeFed organized a letter to MoDOT leadership, signed by 43 organizations from all across Missouri, that urged MoDOT to fully integrate walking and bicycling into their transportation projects and funding. Specifically, we asked MoDOT leaders:
As you choose the next MoDOT Director and other top MoDOT leadership positions, include support for an integrated multi-modal transportation system, meeting the needs of all Missourians, including those who drive, walk, bicycle, and use public transit, and accommodating Missourians of all levels of ability and disability, as one of the top selection criteria.
We will have high expectations of Mr. McKenna as he begins he work with MoDOT.
MoDOT released this information about the appointment:
Patrick K. McKenna has been named the new director of the Missouri Department of Transportation by the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission. The announcement was made today at a press conference following the commission's monthly meeting.
"After a nationwide search, the commission knew Mr. McKenna had the vision and experience to lead the department to a new level of success and achievement," said Stephen R. Miller, chairman of the MHTC. Patrick McKenna previously served as the deputy commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.
"I am excited and honored to take on the director's position at MoDOT," said Patrick McKenna, new director of MoDOT. "Missouri faces a lot of transportation challenges, but MoDOT's employees have proven time and again they can handle it. The department's nationwide reputation for innovation is proof of that."
In his role as deputy commissioner, McKenna served as the chief financial, operating and legislative officer for the organization. He has also worked in leadership positions in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Mr. McKenna also worked for several years as the sole proprietor of a real estate holdings company.
McKenna will replace Interim Director Roberta Broeker, who will return to her previous position as MoDOT's chief financial officer.
MoDOT also released this bio of McKenna (PDF).
Working to create a world-class bicycle and pedestrian network across Missouri is one of the top priorities of MoBikeFed's Vision for Bicycling and Walking in Missouri. Working with statewide agencies like MoDOT--which spends about $2 billion annually on transportation in Missouri--to ensure that walking and bicycling are considered and prioritized, is one of the most important things we do to reach that goal.
