Despite signals from the Missouri House that there may not be support for a gasoline tax increase this year, a Senate panel heard testimony Wednesday arguing the state needs the added revenue to ensure safe roads and bridges.

Members of the Senate Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Safety Committee debated a plan that would boost the motor fuel tax by 1.5 cents per gallon for most motorists and 3.5 cents per gallon for diesel users.

Among those backing the higher tax is Missouri Department of Transportation Director Patrick McKenna.
