New trail opens in former railroad corridor in Chillicothe - first section of a potential 36-mile rail-trail - Chillicothe News

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

The newly-constructed city walking / biking trail opened on Monday. This trail starts at 3rd Street and South Woodrow Street, just west of the old prison site, and continues 1.4 miles to the east entrance (shown above) near the Wabash restaurant. Parking on each end of the trail is near the entrances.

MoBikeFed comment: The City of Chillicothe owns about 36 miles of the Chillicothe-Brunswick line, which is unused for railroad purposes and could become a very interesting rails-to-trails project in northern Missouri. The City has faced some considerable challenges figuring out how to fund the construction and long-term maintenance of the longer section of potential trail.

The recently opened trail is on a short segment of the railroad corridor within the city limits.
