KCMO Bike update: 12 miles downtown loop, 7 miles protected bike lane, BFC app updated | KCMO.org

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

Since 2011, Kansas City has been designated a Bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.

The City’s next priority is to move up to Silver level, and finally to Platinum by the year 2020.

When talking with the League in 2015, the focus was on how we could move up from Bronze to Silver, and there was apparently a miscommunication about the need to re-apply to maintain the Bronze listing.

The City apologizes for the oversight that left KCMO off the Bronze list. Fortunately, the conversations we’ve had with the League give us confidence about moving up to Silver in 2016 with the projects we are completing and launching in 2016.

We certainly have not lost any biking amenities. In fact, with this summer’s completion of the Downtown Loop (12 miles) plus the 7 miles of protected bike lanes (Armour 3 miles, Gregory 2.4 miles and Barry Road 1.5 miles), plus two new projects going out for design RFQ in June (Paseo and Lexington/Gladstone), we are confident that we are moving Kansas City strongly into a position to advance our standing to silver, which has been our primary focus.

Kansas City is definitely a Bicycle Friendly Community, and we will continue working to advance our status higher this year and in future years.

MoBikeFed comment: There was a minor kerfluffle earlier this summer when KCMO's Bicycle Friendly Community ranking was lost due to non-renewal. This article explains how the city is moving forward with its BFC application and more bicycle facilities around the city.
