Carthage Mo implements program to encourage sidewalk maintenance, restoration | Carthage Press

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

People who restore the sidewalks in front of their homes or businesses could be reimbursed part of the cost of that sidewalk by the city under a program that could be funded by the Carthage City Council next week.

City Administrator Tom Short said the sidewalk reimbursement program was resurrected by the council under an ordinance passed in September.

A budget amendment that will be voted on at the Oct. 25 Carthage City Council meeting would provide $25,000 for the program.

Short said the sidewalk participation program is a reimbursement program, meaning the work has to be completed, then the property owner can apply to the city for payment.

He said the city will pay property owners $3 per square foot up to $3,000 per property owner per year.

MoBikeFed comment: Carthage is really working hard to put itself at the forefront of bicycle and pedestrian friendly Missouri communities.

The city is just finishing installation of a comprehensive citywide bicycle lane system that puts Carthage right at the front of Missouri communities for bicycling, with more bicycle lanes per resident than any other city, according to MoBikeFed's analysis.

Now the city is moving to take major steps to maintain and improve its sidewalk system, as well.

Both of these initiatives are steps that MoBikeFed recommends that all cities take. For more information about our recommendations for Missouri cities, visit this page:
