Hannibal city council votes to move foward with sidewalk on narrow road | Hannibal.net

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

Walking is a good form of exercise for most people, unless the walker has to share space with motor vehicles. Because that is periodically occurring on Shinn Lane, city councilman Gordon Ipson is proposing the city build a sidewalk in western Hannibal.

On a vote of 5-1 (councilman Jim Van Hoose voted “no”) the City Council approved seeking the necessary easement at its Sept. 20 meeting.

Ipson proposed the sidewalk after pointing out there is no clear-cut path, that doesn’t entail walking on Shinn Lane, between Moberly Area Community College’s Hannibal site and any of the businesses that are located to the north of the school.

“Shinn Lane in front of the college is currently a very narrow two-lane road with no shoulders, let alone sidewalks,” said Ipson, adding that any pedestrians who choose to use Shinn Lane are “in grave danger of being hit by vehicles.”

MoBikeFed comment: Far too many roads in Missouri communities are like this one--narrow, with ditches and high speed traffic, yet used by a few hardy pedestrians because it is the only available route.

Kudos to Councilman Ipson and the Hannibal City Council for moving forward on this project.
