St. Louis Gateway Arch grounds, trails construction on schedule for completion in 2017 | stltoday.com

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

A reconstructed Washington Avenue entrance with a grassy amphitheater, trails and more will open on the Gateway Arch grounds by the end of this month, officials working on the project said Monday.

The trams carrying visitors to the top of the arch will close the Monday after Thanksgiving, to have parts replaced and up and running again by March.

The revamped Kiener Plaza is still expected to open in the spring, and the new Museum of Western Expansion entrance facing the Old Courthouse will be open next October.

After a series of delays putting completion two years behind schedule, the $380 million project will be finished by the end of 2017, CityArchRiver Foundation spokesman Ryan McClure said. The project began in 2013 and originally was to finish in 2015.

MoBikeFed comment: This is one end result of the City/Arch/River tax in St Louis City and St Louis County, which was passed by the Missouri General Assembly in 2012 and area voters in 2013.

We are very proud to have been among the organizations who worked for passage of the City/Arch/River project at both state and local levels.

City/Arch/River included three components:

1. Re-vamping of the arch grounds with improved landscaping, trails, and better bike/ped connections to the river and to downtown St. Louis

2. A series of improved park areas in St. Louis near the Arch grounds, all connected to the Arch grounds by bicycling and walking paths.

3. Increased investment in the regional trails and greenways system--investment at approximately 2X the previous annual rate for the duration of the City/Arch/River tax
