A bridge on the MKT Trail with timbers that have been in place since trains stopped using the corridor will be replaced soon with a combination of federal and local funds, Gov. Jay Nixon said Friday.

Nixon visited Columbia to announce the distribution of $2.9 million in federal grants for 31 projects developing trails and outdoor recreation facilities. The city received three grants totaling $310,000, with $150,000 slated for the bridge, $10,000 for trail promotion and $150,000 for developing Norma Sutherland Smith Park adjacent to Brown Station Road in northeast Columbia.

Each grant will be matched by city funds.

Nixon also announced the latest extension of Katy Trail State Park, 47.5 miles from Windsor to Pleasant Hill, will be opened officially in December.
