Winfield MO applies for federal funds to add sidewalk to key walk-to-school route | Lincoln County Journal

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

The section of Old Troy Road in Winfield from Darla Drive to West Elm Street is only about 1,200 feet long, but it’s a source of concern for many parents and community leaders.

The street, which was originally used as a wagon trail, is still very narrow, with hills on both sides and no sidewalks. As many Winfield school children use the street to walk to and from school, Mayor Ryan Ruckel said the city is seeking a federal grant to install a pedestrian sidewalk.

“We’ve gotten a lot of feedback from parents saying that their kids can’t walk to school safely,” Ruckel said. “There are also two senior communities downtown that have endorsed the project because they want their residents to be off the road when they walk to the grocery store or to the pharmacy that’s going in by County Market.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for us to provide access to services like healthcare and education.”

MoBikeFed comment: Winfield, like many communities across Missouri, is gradually working to remove the barriers to safe walking and bicycling to school.
