The top recommendation from the Mayor’s Task Force on Pedestrian Safety, to adopt a Vision Zero policy, will go before the Columbia City Council on Monday for a vote.

The task force was established in May 2015 after four people were killed and four others seriously injured since October 2014. The Vision Zero policy, which has a goal of eliminating traffic deaths by 2030, states that traffic deaths and serious injuries are “preventable and, therefore, ethically unacceptable” and directs City Manager Mike Matthes to present an implementation plan to the city council no later than April 30.

“You shouldn’t have to die crossing down the street,” or “walking the sidewalk, especially if something can be done to prevent it,” said Nate Brown, one of the task force members.

Fourth Ward Councilman Ian Thomas, who co-chaired the task force, said cities with Vision Zero policies are reducing traffic deaths and serious injuries.

MoBikeFed comment: Columbia City Council passed the Vision Zero Policy Monday by a unanimous vote!

Columbia becomes the first Missouri city, and the 22nd city in the U.S., to pass a Vision Zero policy.

Congratulations and thanks to Columbia City, MoDOT, and PedNet, who all played key roles in moving the Vision Zero policy forward. Columbia City Council member Ian Thomas was champion for the policy on the City Council.
