Washington MO to complete new segment of Riverfront Trail - potential connector to Rock Island Trail | emissourian.com

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

In 2015, when the city of Washington acquired the final piece of property along the Missouri River, plans were put in motion to create a new western portion of the riverfront trail.

The purchase gave the city land along the Missouri River, from South Point west to St. John’s Creek. . . .

The grant calls on the city to have the project completed in three years. Dunkle hopes to have work done sooner. He said, if things go well, this phase of the trail could be done by fall 2017.

Dunkle said future phases would be completed as funds become available. The future phases would connect the current trail with the new trail, connect the new trail to the parks system and other additions.

The proposed 12-foot-wide trail would extend west from the end of Elbert Drive across the former Rau and Politte properties which the city acquired. The new trail would be about 1 mile long.

MoBikeFed comment: This trail is not only an important extension of the riverfront trail in Washington, it is also potentially part of the trail connection between the Katy Trail and the forthcoming Rock Island Trail State Park, which will end just a few miles from Washington.

The riverfront trail will cross under the new Missouri River Bridge at Washington, which is under construction and will include a new, dedicated bike/ped lane to connect Washington to the Katy Trail, just north of Washington across the Missouri River.
