Vision Zero: No More Traffic Deaths | Bicycling

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

Over the past few years, nearly every major city in the US has adopted an initiative known as Vision Zero. The term, which originated in Sweden in the 1990s, urges us to stop accepting traffic fatalities as inevitable, and to instead work toward building a world in which no one must risk their life simply getting from point A to point B. Enforcing its recommended policies puts the burden of responsibility on automotive and urban designers rather than commuters, prioritizing safety as highly as efficiency in matters of transportation.

When implemented intelligently, the initiative has potential for drastic and positive reform. However, too often there’s a lack of actual policy in the grand mayoral announcements of Vision Zero. It’s quite easy to sign a document stating that no one should die driving, walking, or biking in your city, but actually instituting the changes required to make roads safer requires a lot of work.

MoBikeFed comment: Columbia recently became the first Missouri city to adopt a Vision Zero policy. We hope many more Missouri cities will follow.
