New Amtrak stop in Arcadia MO officially opens - Post-Dispatch

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

Nearly half a century had passed since anyone in this small Ozarks community could buy a train ticket out of town.

Now, leaders there are hoping a new Amtrak stop will be more than a way to leave. They anticipate the new station will be a draw that will spur economic development, bolster tourism and bring new jobs.

It’s an area that already relies heavily on visitors to support its local economy. The town of about 600 sits close to Johnson’s Shut-Ins, Elephant Rocks and Taum Sauk Mountain state parks, which drew a combined 736,000 visitors last year.

The stop on the Texas Eagle line officially opened Sunday after an inaugural run a few days earlier. That Amtrak line is the successor to the former Missouri Pacific Railroad and Texas and Pacific Railway’s train of the same name.

MoBikeFed comment: Remember that most Missouri Amtrak routes allow bicycles to be brought in one way or another - on several routes bicycles can be carried on, for other routes (the Texas Eagle among them) they must be boxed or checked as luggage.
