The Hominy Creek Trail in northeast Columbia, the city's newest, will officially be dedicated Thursday.

The trail was built in two phases, beginning in 2007 and finishing in the winter of 2016. It connects Green Valley Drive to Lillian Drive along a 2.9-mile concrete stretch. The trail was funded with both the local park sales tax and the federal funds from the GetAbout Non-Motorized Transportation Pilot program.

Janet Godon, the park planner for Columbia Parks and Recreation, said it was built to help create a complete trail system throughout Columbia. It is the first to link the neighborhoods north of Interstate 70 and those south of Indian Hills Park to the trail system.

"It's essential we try to connect all citizens to the Columbia trail system," she said. "We have people who try to get a lot of miles out of our trails."
