Efforts are underway to transform a half-mile swath of Pasadena Boulevard in Pine Lawn and Northwoods in north St. Louis County.

The aims of the $5.6-million project go beyond beautification. Construction seeks to improve the roadway’s walkability and stormwater management, through installation of rain gardens and “bioretention basins” — landscaped depressions for runoff. . . .

The project also plans to better accommodate pedestrians. Currently, pedestrians have no sidewalk. That includes children walking to nearby Barack Obama Elementary School. Students, instead, must walk in the roadway along Pasadena Boulevard.
