Joplin area bike/ped plan: What do citizens who walk and bicycle want? |

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

Jake Wilson, of Joplin, when asked his priorities, said, "Mine more than anything is getting us trails connected into Northwest Arkansas to go state to state like the Katy Trail. More rails-to-trails projects as well as bike path. We do a lot of bike packing, so we would like to be able to go state to state on a trail system and not even have to get on the roads."

Sam Jones, of Joplin, said that he commutes exclusively by bike and sees a need for more lanes and paths throughout the area. Additionally, current bike lanes are not taken care of well, he said, making it easy to pop a tire on rocks, gravel and other debris in the lanes.

A Joplin firefighter devoted to biking, Mark Cox, said, "The main things are connecting local communities such as Carl Junction, Carthage, Webb City, Carterville. Connecting everything is big to me. More bike awareness and more bike lanes, lanes that are the appropriate distance and measure, not in the gutter and next to the curb, because it's not fun to ride that way."

Cox, who also owns Blue's Bike Co. in Joplin, says Arkansas biking paths and walking trails are good examples for Missouri and Joplin to adopt.

He said cycling is growing as a mode of transportation and brings along with it an economic booster.
