Opinion: Joplin needs to use current area bike/ped plan to become far more bicycle friendly | joplinglobe.com

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

People use bike and walking paths for a variety of reasons — exercise, family recreation and even for transportation.

Joplin, as it has rebuilt following the 2011 tornado and even before that disaster, is doing a good job of adding sidewalks. Sidewalks make it possible for people to traverse the town without having to use vehicles.

But when it comes to bike lanes, we have only added the bare minimum.

More than 100 area residents recently attended a meeting held by the Joplin Area Transportation Study Organization. It was looking for ideas for a Joplin Area Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. This organization is made up of representatives from Joplin area city, county and state government agencies who plan expansion of repairs of area streets, highways, bridges, public transportation, and bicycle and pedestrian routes.
