People walking in and near downtown St. Louis in recent weeks have been noticing something different when they cross the busier streets.

The city has reprogrammed walk lights to give pedestrians a head start.

At more than 80 corners in the downtown area, pedestrians now get a go signal anywhere from a half-second to four seconds before parallel motorists are given a green light.
